Oft requested Fastpass+ changes coming Monday

The Disney Blog - 1 hour 5 min ago

00-mk-fpplus

There’s some magic happening behind the scenes at Walt Disney World’s new MyMagic+ and Fastpass+ service. A few weeks ago Park’s chair Tom Staggs promised us changes were coming, and now they’ve delivered.

Starting Monday, after you have used your initial three FastPass+, you will be permitted to select an additional Fastpass+ via the kiosks located in the parks. Then, after you’ve used that one, you’ll be able to choose another, and so on until you run out of time or the park runs out of Fastpasses (most likely the latter at EPCOT, btw. It only has 8 FP attractions).

Disney has also turned on the ability to select and use additional Fastpass+ when you park hop as well.

I have a few questions about these options and I’ve reached out to Disney for the answers. But here they are…

1a. Do you have to use your first three Fastpass+ entitlements before you can park hop?

1b. If not, do you lose your Fastpass+ in the originating park if you do park hop. For instance, if you have two morning FP reserved and one late night FP, can you park hop in the middle and use FP at the second gate?

2. How does this work in parks with tiered offerings. Assuming, a FP+ for Test Track is available can I reserve it after I’ve already used one FP for Test Track in my original three entitlements? (it would have to be a real slow day at EPCOT for this scenario to be true, but it’s good to know).

…let me know if you have other questions and I’ll try to get them answered.

For now this change is only available via the in park kiosks. But a Disney World spokeswoman says that they are working to make it available via the app.

25th Anniversary Events Announced for Disney’s Hollywood Studios on May 1

The Disney Blog - 3 hours 12 min ago

Disney's Hollywood Studios 25th Anniversary

May 1 is the silver anniversary of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With 25 years of history and decades of Hollywood icons to celebrate, you might expect a year long bash at the third gate to open at Walt Disney World. However, that’s not the way Disney does things anymore. Still we will be getting a nice line up of events on the day itself.

Direct from Disney, here’s what to expect if you’re in the park on May 1:

  • At 10 a.m., Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will take the stage with Disney’s Hollywood Studios Vice President Dan Cockerell to start the celebration day, honoring some of the 25-year cast members during a short re-dedication ceremony.
  • A special motorcade — “Stars of the Studios” — will make its way down Hollywood Blvd. beginning at 7 p.m. and feature many of the famous characters showcased throughout the park. Mickey and Minnie will be joined by television and film stars including Captain Jack Sparrow, Darth Vader, Doc McStuffins, Wreck-It Ralph, Venellope, Sofia the First and more.
  • Following the motorcade, the area in front of the park’s Sorcerer Hat Stage will become a dance party before a fireworks show ends the day in grand fashion at 9:30 p.m. The pyrotechnics show, which will be high in the sky above the Sorcerer Mickey Hat, will pay tribute to 25 years of show business stories that have been told throughout the park.
  • And, of course, there will be commemorative merchandise to buy.

As always, everything is subject to change.

Tom Hiddleston (Loki) Sings The Bear Necessities

The Disney Blog - 7 hours 50 min ago

bear-necessities-jungle-book

What is it with celebrities singing “The Bear Necessities”? First we had UK signers Robbie Williams and Oly Murs give their take on the classic song from Disney’s Jungle Book. Now Loki, aka Tom Hiddleston, is getting in on the act.

Better watch it now as we don’t know how long this will stay available on Youtube:

This version was performed at the Friendship Works charity gala in November 2013, so technically Hiddleston’s version came first. He’s such a trend setter.

Ihu’s Breakaway Falls Nears Completion at SeaWorld’s Aquatica

The Disney Blog - 8 hours 56 min ago

Ihu's Breakaway Falls med

The water park wars don’t usually get a lot of coverage in the traditional or online media, but it’s on in Orlando.

  • Universal is rumored to be working on a complete re-envisioning of the water park experience (either on the property where Wet-n-Wild now sits or on a new plot of land closer to Cabana Bay Resort).
  • Disney’s two water parks, great as they are, have remained stagnant for years. (It’s been 9 years since Crush-n-Gusher opened).
  • LEGOLAND Florida chose to make their water park an add-on to regular park admission, which I think hurts them a bit.
  • SeaWorld, meanwhile, has built a fantastic park in Aquatica and added on to it twice.

This latest Aquatica addition, Ihu’s Breakaway Falls, may not have the capacity of some of the other attractions, but it does have all the thrills, and then some.

In the video below, Aquatica’s Vice President Bryan Nadeau goes “Behind the Falls” to show us the latest updates to Ihu’s Breakaway Falls soon to be Orlando’s tallest, steepest and only multi-drop tower slide of its kind.

At nearly 80 feet tall, Ihu’s Breakaway Falls is where you’ll face your fears and each other. Offering four unique slide paths, you’ll step into one of three breakaway boxes and watch each other fall one-by-one or test your bravery on a fourth open slide for a different but just as thrilling experience. You’ll never know who’s going to breakaway first – and the anticipation of who drops next is part of the wild ride! From the installation of three “Breakaway Boxes” to raising the more than 40,000 pound signature Aquatica roof, crews have been working day and night to get ready to open Ihu’s Breakaway Falls on May 9.

Which Orlando water park is your favorite?

Nerd Nite Orlando XIII

Analog Artist Digital World - 19 hours 23 min ago

On March 13th, I went to Stardust Video and Coffee (1842 E. Winter Park Road, Orlando, Fl.) to experience Nerd Nite Orlando XIII.  I arrived early, ordered a Humus plate and a Coke and found a table with a sweeping view of the room. As people arrived, I populated the sketch. Nerd Nite Orlando is an evening of entertaining yet thought-provoking talks across many disciplines – all while the audience drinks along in a casual bar atmosphere. Speakers present for 20-25 minutes each on a fascinating subject of their choice, often in an uncanny and unconventional way. It’s like the Discovery Channel – with beer!

Josh Manning, the founder and “Nerdboss” of Nerd Nite Orlando was the first speaker. His presentation was about “Chindogu: Unuseless Inventions” which translates to “really weird” (chin) “tool” (dōgu). This is the noble Japanese art of eccentric invention. Often causing more problems than they solve, chindogu ultimately serve no real purpose. Neither useful nor useless, they are therefore “unuseless” (similar to how “undead” means not dead and not alive). So what’s the point then? Unbridled creativity, of course! Chindogu are like anarchists that have broken free from the pragmatism of traditional invention. Come discover the wonderful world of unuseless creations that include baby mopsa tissue dispenser cap, and umbrella ties! Josh is always interested in new ways to think differently, he also co-organizes a group of employees at Kennedy Space Center called the “Spaceport Innovators.” In the 2nd grade he even entered an invention contest by submitting his “fishing backpack” creation, which was just his school backpack outfitted with a car air freshener so that he could carry around all the fish he caught minus the stink. He didn’t win any prizes, not even an honorable mention.

The second presentation was “Digital Heroes: How Video Games Can Save The World” by Carlos Donze  A growing body of evidence suggests that video games play (pun totally intended!) a larger role in brain development than previously thought. In this talk, he discussed their role in tackling some of the world’s seemingly insurmountable problems, such as personal happiness, poverty, and helping the terminally ill. Let Carlos show you how playing video games can translate in to real life power-ups!

Emily Empel presented, “Cards Against the Future: Generating Possibilities Instead of Predictions” Talking about the FUTURE is old school. All around us, societal “squares” are sanitizing our conversations about the future. These politicians, business leaders and academics rely on forecast models that reduce uncertainty. Some people like to think things progress along a straight linear path, but progress and change happens in sudden unpredictable surges. Let’s be real: the world is getting weirder. Forecasts that discount mystical, immeasurable,  elements limit our ability to fundamentally explore what’s ahead. In other words, exploring the future is a job for societal misfits, and total nerds. In the spirit of Chindogu, Emily showed a hilarious clip of a robotic ketchup dispenser. Obsessing over the FUTURE(S) is where it’s at.  She explores the present and the future according to a new set of rules. She is a trend spotter, marketing disciple, and corporate futurist. She provides executive management with strategic insights to identify emerging developments. Emily earned a Master of Science degree in Future Studies from the University of Houston. Her research has been featured by organizations such as The World Future Society and AlterNet. A former nomad, she’s slowly realizing, thanks to fellow Orlandoans and a lot of imagination, that Orlando doesn't suck.

Emily wanted to talk after the presentations to brainstorm about a creative project she has brewing. Her pink haired friend Natalie Chandler kept me company as Emily discussed, and sometimes argued the future with people after her talk. Natalie confided that Emily is super busy yet she wants to layer this intricate creative project into her schedule over the next several months. Emily outlined the project that she and others are brain storming. The World Future Society Conference is coming to Orlando this July and she wants to put together a show for that conference. Tentatively titled, "Near Now" the project is aimed at bringing together intellectuals and creatives who are interested in exploring how the future of Orlando can unfold in 2030. I agreed to help bring together creative people that could help bring this vision to light. The seed is planted. So far, progress is slow but if it is meant to bloom, it will. The possibilities are limitless.
